Before investigating or investing in bridging or bridging equipment make sure that bridging is the right solution for your company. Once it has been determined that bridging is needed, you need to ask yourself some of the following questions:

Q. How many hours and sites will I need on bridge calls?

A. By asking this question the decision of whether to purchase bridging equipment or use a bridging service can be found. You should base this question around a one month time frame. A video consultant or bridging consultant may be needed to determine which direction you should go.

Q. What are some advantages/disadvantages of owning bridging equipment or using a  bridging service?

A. Some advantages to owning your own bridging equipment are the ability to schedule and use a bridge whenever needed, for a  bridging service you must book all calls in advance. A disadvantage of owning bridging equipment is cost , dedicated line charges, constantly changing new equipment that often needs upgrading and usually a dedicated bridging operator. Some advantages of using  bridging service provider are no equipment costs to bear, technical support, newest features, and not having to dedicate people specifically for the bridge. Some disadvantages are you must have an excellent provider, because your call will be at their mercy.

Q. What effect will bridging have on my video conference?

A. Besides the effect that the call will have multiple parties, you may notice quality drops a bit depending on the type of bridge you are connected to. Also when in a bridge call you may use such as camera control may not work, but usually during a bridge call your connection is more stable.

Q. What other information will I need to know before placing a bridge call?

A. Whether you own your bridge or are using a service you should always know the manufacturers of the equipment you are connected to as well as the speed for the call. Phone numbers and contact names are crucial to making your call a success in the event a problem should arise with sites. The type of call you would like is also important to know, such as voice activated video call. When using a bridging provider note that you will be billed by port hours, dial out hours (if needed), and options you select.

With the above questions you should be able to get your bridge call started and hopefully have a successful call.
